I’ve been busy since going freelance full time in August, and I have a whole slew of pieces to share with you! Last time I posted a “Recent Work” Wrap up I had just finished the cover story for Pet Business Magazine’s Natural Supplement; this morning I submitted yet another cover story for one of their supplements—this time on making the most out of Pet Food, which is traditionally a small margin category at retail.

I’ve also edited a novella, am currently putting together two pieces for Long Island Bride and Groom Magazine, have contributed to She’s Self Employed and Diary of a Mad Freelancer and written a number of other pieces for Pet Business. Let’s get on with it, shall we?

At She’s Self Employed:

How She Does It Profile: Alisa Bowman

How to start a business, have a baby, start another business and then not kill your spouse… Have you heard that saying troubles come in threes? In this Q&A with Alisa Bowman she chats about how she survived.

At Diary of a Mad Freelancer:

Secrets of a Trade Editor

I spill on what I learned as a trade editor—including how to break into writing for B2B magazines. Be sure to read the comments on this one, as they are every bit as informative as the piece itself.

At Suess’s Pieces:

From Writer to Writer: Melissa Breau on Getting Started

I shared what the best thing I ever did for my writing and discuss the importance to knowing when to take the plunge (and hit send).

At Thursdaybram.com:

Melissa Breau Goes Full Time Freelance And Tells Us About It

I explain why going freelance was the right decision for me, and why now, as well as sharing all the plans I made prior to handing in my resignation. I also dish on how excited I am about the concept of an integrated life—and yeah, that means working weekends, but it also leaves room for five-day trips to Charleston, SC.

At Writing Out Words:

Why A Self-Published Author Still Needs An Editor

Have you ever been in the middle of a book you’re really enjoying when you catch a typo? Or maybe it’s a word that just doesn’t quite fit, or a character who you’re pretty sure had brown eyes earlier, but whose lover is suddenly talking about their beautiful baby blues? I share what a book editor does and how come having one is an essential part of the publishing process.

At brandi-annuyemura.com:

From Full-Time Job to Full-Time Freelancer: One Editor’s True Story

I share what inspires me and what keeps me going; namely, my mentors, my darling boyfriend and a whole heck of a lot of worrying and planning.

At freelance-write-now.com:

Tips On Getting Published In Trade Magazines

Writing for trade magazines is a great way for beginning freelance writers to learn the ropes and gain some clips for their portfolios. The competition is often much lower at trade magazines—in this Q&A I share the info every writer wants to know.

At Pet Business Magazine:

Putting The Pieces Together (page 10 of the flipbook)

Success in selling natural pet products hinges on a retailers ability to find the right merchandising and marketing mix to maximize the impact of its selection and reach its unique customer base.

Small Treasures

A Q&A with Tom Pletcher, director of marketing at Absorption Corp, where he talks about how pet retailers can leverage the small animal category.

Ordering Made Easy

A profile piece—After nine years of steady growth, Wholesalepet.com has re-launched with a multitude of new features and additional benefits for retailers.

Thinking Inside the Box

The kitty litter category is often ignored, but with a little attention, it can be a great source of repeat sales for pet specialty stores.

New and Natural

A Q&A with Performance Pet vice president of sales and marketing Rob Cadenhead, where he talks about the company’s new Spring Naturals line.

Specialized Feline Foods

Niche cat diets offer retailers a point of differentiation and a chance to help build a loyal cat-owning customer base.

At Jargonwriter.com, my other blog:

I shared what I learned at a pitch event for my pet project, Moxy Magazine;  I announced that I was leaving my full time job as an editor to start my own business as a freelance writer full time; I shared what scared (read: terrified) me about going out on my own; shared some tips for writers on doing phone interviews (since at this point I’ve done more than I can count); after my first week I shared how reality differed from my expectations; I shared a brief on my business plan as a freelance writer (including what services I’m offering); announced that I was a judge for the writing competition during Writer’s Week over at Suess’s Pieces; shared a story of when things went wrong—I spent four hours at the vet when I was on deadline, ut oh; and debated the wisdom of accepting rush jobs, based on a recent experience.

Yikes that’s a lot of links—I’ve been busy! Stay tuned for more hot happenings and another post next week…
